Sticking to UI/UX trends is a losing strategy

<p>The user experience. The fact that there is a whole practice that studies the way humans interact with a product or a service or a system.. is so stellar to me. So I’m going to write this post about:</p>

<p>I recently learned how to code by taking a front-end engineering course at a bootcamp. (Shout out, The Iron Yard!) But becoming part of the tech community has allowed many doors to open for me, not just in the world of front-end engineering. The tech community also gives you exposure to design, media, entrepreneurship, etc. There are many topics that fall under the tech umbrella. I’m mostly excited about the UX/design world.</p>
<p>UX is exciting because without the practice of conducting user experience research, designers and developers will keep making poor designs on products we use on the daily. Unless they are building an app/product/interface that only themselves will be using, then the user experience is probably one of the most important parts of a project.</p>
<p>Let me sum up why I’m so excited about UX:</p>
<h4>UX isn’t only on the web, but in our daily lives as well.</h4>
<p>I think about the user experience a lot. I push a door that was meant to be pulled and I think, “well, that was poor design.” Or the other day, when I ordered some tea and got a packet of honey. You know, like one of those sauce packets that you have to tear open. Tearing those open are my worst nightmare. Not only do I have to deal with the anxiety caused by the process of tearing it and hoping for my dear life that it doesn’t splat out. But then, when it does end up splatting out, I have to deal with the mess I just made and the sticky honey all over my fingers. Sauce packets all over the world need a whole new redesign. Another one that makes the UXer in me cringe: self-flushing toilets. I won’t go too into this one, but as a human, I much rather flush at my own will rather than the robot toilet deciding when it’s done with me. Just sayin’.</p>
<p>But see, my point here is that design thinking is a thing of our daily lives, not just on the web. UX is about the user, not the message or medium.</p>
<h4>A UXer is a storyteller.</h4>
<p>UXers gather research and findings that make up a user story. And the job of a UXer is to make design decisions accordingly to those stories. Translating research to create an experience for a user can be such an art. It can be a story that the user embarks on while navigating through your product. Now the user story is one that was molded from the architecture of your work. Which is so badass if done properly.</p>
<h4>If you’re not already an empath, UX will teach you to become one.</h4>
<p>Sure, anyone could conduct usability tests and gather hard data on what people are feeling and thinking when using your product, but to really succeed in interpreting these results, you have to level with the user. ~<em>become one with the user</em>~ Understand their story as if it were your own. Tap into all the emotions you could (or couldn’t) possibly feel and dig for more possible reasoning behind human behavior when using a product.</p>
<h4>Humans are fascinating.</h4>
<p>This reason alone inspires me to learn more about UX. So, the user is always changing right, meaning user behavior can become something ‘trendy’. (Although there are behaviors that are more consistent as well.) But those trends (or non-trends) are what a UXer has to keep up with and study carefully. UXers are a kind of human experts.</p>
<p>Thinking about these make me think how crucial User-Centered Design (USD) can really be. UCD is pretty self-explanatory, design built from the bottom up focusing on the needs, wants, limitations of the user. Accessibility is something important that can fall under user limitations. Designing for inclusion will make you a better UX-er — and all your users, no matter who they are, will be <em>#winning</em>.</p>
<p>I mean, I can deep dive into any of these topics that make me love UX but that about sums up what drives me to want to become a super awesome UX boss lady. Maybe it will get you thinking about UX and design thinking too.</p>
