Sticking to UI/UX trends is a losing strategy

<h4>Since a few months, I have been teaching myself about design. I delved into it. Emerged myself into it. I watched a lot of YouTube videos, read a lot of articles and watched work on sites like Behance. Here’s what I learned.</h4>
I’ve come to learn that there are many kinds of designers. And many types. Sometimes the line is blurry where the designer ends end the artist begins. Some of them are more illustrators to me. Sometimes I don’t even know.
I’ve learned that workflow, process and explaining your decisions (mostly to one’s self) shows growth as a creator. I’ve learned to apply this in my work as a front-end designer and also as a designer.
I’ve learned that design and illustrations of all kind and good quality — requires time, diligence, research, care, patience, and it also requires respect. Respect to myself and respect to, and of the person/cause I am making it for.
I’ve learned that all tasks are noble.

I’ve learned that I don’t “just make it”. The preparation is not easy. Communication about the product or design, is not easy. Communication with peers, clients and/or developers is not easy. The actual making of the product is easier than I thought. And a lot more fun!
<a href="http://ift.tt/2neSkx3">I’ve learned that (constructive) feedback is not a bad monster</a>. Designers actually are interested in getting other designers to that next level. Because that’s what all designers are yearning for. In general. A few exceptions excluded. We all know who they are.
I’ve learned that being self-taught is not bad. It is imperative that I know what direction I am going with the information I just obtained. I have an opportunity to be like Leonardo DaVinci. I make sure that the topics I learn about are valuable chunks, which I try to apply in projects.
I’ve learned to be selective about the information I have gathered. I can’t learn everything at the same time. On the other side of the coin, <a href="http://ift.tt/2nTGkj4">I need to master what I am currently learning.</a>
I’ve learned that organization of <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JCv5XQnrpd8">files</a>, <a href="https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gQ1fCqXedbg">layers</a>, links, emails and notes is crucial.
I’ve learned to be kind about my learning process. Because sometimes what I know is already working for me. That takes confidence. This confidence can only grow faster, if I actually discuss my work and process with others.
When I watch them explain their work, or a process, the amount of encouragement I feel is tremendous. I want to know what they know. And then I do. Then I still feel like an imposter. A grateful imposter.
